Read anything by Philip Reeves! The opening scene in Mortal engines is one of the most interesting and best written openings to a book I have read yet, (right up there with Peter Pan)!

The only complaint I have about the series is that it starts to follow a template once it gets into it a bit.

But there are some really interesting characters. Over the top in a lot of cases, but for some reason it works. Hester is a favourite. So is Grike (I just found out that is in the American version -- what is wrong with Americans that they feel the need to change well written fiction to preserve their precious sensibilities, or whatever!?)

In any case, the concept of this series is really wonderful. And the cover art stunning! (That is what actually made me read it -- I do judge books by their covers).

Also, if you are into sci-fi/ fantasy, and haven't already read The Engineer Trilogy by K.J. Parker, get on that one. Not YA fic, but great read!
